Dr. Hefley: Minimally Invasive Hip - Coach Broyles

" I chose minimally invasive hip surgery because I wanted a quick recovery. And that's what happened. Often I'm asked where did I go, and I use the doctor that I chose for my hip surgery. Dr. Hefley was the only one I knew of in Arkansas that would perform this type of pain-free hip surgery. Dr. Hefley was recommended as a doctor who would do the surgery and I would recover much faster — and I did! I resumed my normal activities in three days. I never had to use the walker. One of my duties as Athletic Director is to give awards and make announcements at halftime on the court. I was out there for about 10 minutes, introducing and shaking hands and visiting with people, and it was painless. Five days after hip surgery I flew to Memphis in a private plane, made a 30 minute speech, got on the plane and flew back, and it was painless. Before the surgery I was in much pain.... The surgery eliminated the pain to this day. I walk three miles a day, I play golf painlessly... In two or three years I'm going to be right back asking him to do my left hip!"

— Coach Frank Broyles

“I had been home bound and in so much pain for almost a year trying to over come problems that prevented me from having surgery. When I finally got over these problems, I was scared to death to have the surgery. I couldn't believe it when I woke up from surgery and I was pain free! I have been ever since. It's so wonderful to have my life back thanks to the wonderful skills of Dr. Larry Nguyen and the great care of Arkansas Surgical Hospital. I will always be grateful to Dr. Nguyen and his sweet staff."

— B.B. Fordyce, Arkansas

“Both of my doctors, Dr. Hefley and Dr. Moore, were very professional and personable and treated me like they cared and not like I was just another patient.

Dr. Moore came by to see me one night after dinner at home and putting his kids to bed. He took time to talk and not just a 'how are you doing' visit. He also made sure my lunch was in my room for me when I came to the hospital since I did not get there until after the normal lunch time.
I don’t know why anyone would choose to have their surgery with any other physicians or anywhere other than Arkansas Surgical Hospital.”

— T.R., Russellville, AR

“I endured the physical abuse of rice and soybean farming in the buckshot mud of southeast Arkansas for over 40 years.  Add to that arthritic and bowed knees.  To say that I had pain was a gross understatement.  Because of the fine surgical skills of Dr. Scott Bowen and the excellent care I received at Arkansas Surgical Hospital, I experienced two total knee replacements that now allow me the pain free pleasure of yard work, golf and keeping up with 8 grandchildren.”

— D. Walt, Dumas, AR

" After a lifetime of using, and abusing, my legs in any sport that had a ball attached to it, my knees finally sent me the memo…”we’re done”.  In an effort to allow me to limp to the finish line, my personal physician Dr. Ron Fewell, referred me to Dr. Jason Stewart…for that referral I am eternally grateful.

He put a patch on the problem for about three years with a series of Orthovisc injections.  The therapy was effective to a point and allowed me to squeeze a few more years out of the “original equipment”.   At every Orthovisc session I would ask the good doctor, “is it time to bite the bullet and have the knees replaced?”  Each time the response would be the same, “when that time comes, you won’t ask me, you will tell me it’s time.”

When that day finally arrived Dr. Stewart simply stated…”I’ll do my job if you’ll do yours”.  And man-o-day, did he do his job!!  With the utmost professional care, compassion, and attention he set about the task of giving me back what I had lost through the years, the ability to use my legs without limitation and without pain.  Words can’t adequately express my deep appreciation for that gift!!  THANK YOU Dr. Jason Stewart.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Jason’s outstanding staff: Chris, Kay, Yvonne, Crystal, PT Staff and all the others who were so kind and helpful throughout the entire process….very special people who helped make the experience even more memorable.  Thank you!"

— C. Hicks, North Little Rock, AR

" My pain was constant and near unbearable. I "waddled" when I walked because I had bone on bone and my right hip was worn down so. This also affected my back and I was in continuous pain! Immediately after surgery......NO PAIN! I used a walker for three days and a cane for one week. No rehabilitation was necessary. I am 72 years of age and now have the stamina and ability that I had when I was much younger. The hospital (Arkansas Surgical Hospital) had a country club atmosphere with excellent service. Thank you Dr. Hefley and all of your staff for giving me my life back! "

— Roberta Sheppard Rhein, Little Rock, AR

" When it gets to the point of no return, whether you are an athlete, mechanic, or a housewife you will know it is that time. Time for what you ask? Joint replacement! When that time came for me, I researched every avenue possible and 3 names kept popping up in conversation and in articles, so I decided to go with Dr. William Hefley, and boy what a great move that was. I have had a lot of very successful surgeries from two very good friends and very well known doctors, but this was different. This was going to be hip replacement due to a totally worn out joint. When I contacted Dr. Hefley and his staff they really made me feel comfortable about my hip replacement. I live in Texas and he is in Little Rock, AR. No problem! They made it so easy for me to have surgery 8 hours away. First, after receiving my MRI scan and X-rays and confirming that a hip replacement was needed, he set up appointments for me at his office, the local internal medicine doctor, and the hospital all in one day with surgery to follow the very next day. His surgery center is the most home feeling place you could ever be for a hospital procedure. It is small, quiet, has a great nursing staff and you really feel like they care about you. Dr. Hefley not only gave me my life back, but he reassured me that I had made the right decision in choosing Little Rock with his personal care and concern.

I’m an 8 time world champion rodeo cowboy and when you can’t move anymore it is scary! Our whole life is about how fast you move and being able to perform at your best. Since my surgery... I do some 25 a year all over the US, Canada, Dominican Republic, Brazil, and New Zealand and produce roping events as well. Without the good fortune of meeting Dr. William Hefley, none of this would be happening. I was unable to walk, sleep, ride, or be myself until I had my hip replacement. With that being said, there is only one place to go for joint replacement surgery! Bowen Hefley Orthopedics! Let Dr. Hefley and his associates fix you up!"

— Joe Beaver, 8-time world rodeo champion

" After years of hard riding, professional horse trainer James Kelly Coffee had injured his hip and needed surgery. Dr. Hefley performed the procedure and got Kelly back to his physically demanding work and lifestyle. Kelly is not only riding and training horses to his full physical ability… he’s also running marathons! Thanks to Dr. Hefley and the rest of the team at Bowen Hefley Orrthopedics, Kelly is back in the saddle and stronger than ever before."

" As you know from my “One Hip Book”, my life was inexorably changed for the better because I bucked up and decided to have my hip replacement surgery with you. I languished in almost constant grinding pain for months before deciding that I’d never even begin to improve until I got on the other side of this dreaded surgery. It was my fear of the unknown process, itself, that held me back all that time. I’d never even been in a hospital. But as time passed and I took more and more of that prescription pain reliving medication into my body (and poor overworked liver) I realized this was no way to be living live at just 56 years old.

Looking back, I realize how the hip replacement has enabled me to regain my normal life at 63 years old. I can dance, play golf, take long walks, stand and sleep without pain. Your remarkable, minimally invasive surgery in just a few hours and my overnight stay in the hospital gave me back the life I’d known until that incurable osteoarthritis took hold.

Looking back today, almost seven years later, I wanted to write and say thank you for this gift. You and your staff were absolutely wonderful to me through the entire process. You are indeed such a kind, straightforward and capable surgeon. I know I was meant to find you in the almost mystical way that I did and thereby avoid the already scheduled traditional long-incision surgery that would have had me in rehab for months afterwards.

Your method left me walking with a walker the next day, driving within three weeks and hitting chips shots again in less than three months. All with no formal rehab. Nothing except walking on my new hip to strengthen it daily. The two small scars are barely noticeable. Life is good again. I’ve never played better golf as an adult, and I wanted you to know. Thank you again."

" Kelsey, an NCAA Division I basketball player, injured her shoulder during her senior year in high school. After playing with her injury for an entire season, she realized her game was suffering – and her shoulder was not getting any better. Upon examination, it became clear how serious her condition was. After a complicated surgery which essentially reattached her shoulder, Kelsey recovered quickly and was able to compete to the best of her ability once again."

" My hip joint needed to be replaced so I began my research and it took me to Scott Bowen and Arkansas Surgical Hospital.  My outcome has been excellent and exceeded my expectations.

I am a healthcare risk manager and it is my profession to look for areas of high risk that adversely affects patient care.  So, when I entered the Arkansas Surgical Hospital, I was first a patient and second a healthcare risk manager.  This hospital does everything right and is the standard that every hospital should strive for.  They have the lowest infection rate, the lowest re-admission rate and the highest patient satisfaction rate.  Every healthcare personnel who interacted with me every time performed patient identification!  Why is this important?  It reduces medical errors!

The hospital personnel and healthcare providers provided information on all processes that I had performed and were immediately responsive when I had a post-op allergic reaction.  Medications were identified and explained prior to administration.  Personnel introduced themselves and identified their role.  It was obvious the healthcare team worked as a team and communicated as a team.  Again, this reduces medical error!

The clinical staff at Dr. Bowen’s office could not have been nicer.  Calls were returned quickly and when I needed assessment, I was worked into the schedule within 24 hours.

I found Dr. Bowen to be an excellent listener and an exceptional surgeon.  He is very caring and never seems to be in a hurry.  He gives you his time.

In summary, I found the Arkansas Surgical Hospital to be exceptional and found Dr. Bowen and his staff to be both efficient and caring.  Thank you all for the best surgery and care that has enabled me to have such an excellent outcome."

" Astounding, magnificent, totally unbelievable are just a few words I can use to describe my feelings after having a total knee replacement.  Dr. Bowen is a tell-it-like-it-is surgeon who truly gave me my life back.  Due to the terrible pain and stiffness in my knee I had given up my love of working in my flower garden and taking long walks around our property with my side-kick, Brodie (our dog who believes he’s human and is treated like it too).

My surgery was done at Arkansas Surgical Hospital, which is an extraordinary facility unlike any hospital I’ve ever seen or heard of - in a great way.  Surgery went exactly as expected and my pain was managed perfectly.  Every person that I came in contact with during my stay was exceptional.

I have told all of my family and friends of the miracle Dr. Bowen and his team pulled off.  I couldn’t remember being pain-free and frankly really only expected to continue having some pain after getting a new knee.  Oh how wrong I was!  Dr. Bowen had explained the importance of the post-op physical therapy working hard to obtain the greatest benefit possible.  From about 7 weeks post-op I have been totally and completely pain-free.  I have been getting my flower beds cleaned out, taking some nice long walks and I’ve even been working on building a concrete walkway.  I have my life back… a million thanks to Dr. Bowen for making it all possible."

" I have been very active my entire life with tennis being my favorite sport. During recent years, arthritis in my 75 year old knees has resulted in pain and decreased mobility. Injections in my knees were not successful in reducing the pain. I contacted Dr. Jason Stewart about what to do next, primarily because of the excellent hip surgery he performed on my wife, Sharon (She was able to resume her normal 8-10 mile daily walks within three months following the surgery) and the good references that he has regarding knee surgeries.

After reviewing the x-rays, we decided knee replacement surgery was the best option. My right knee was replaced by Dr. Stewart at Arkansas Surgical Hospital on January 8, 2018. I was very impressed with the professionalism, the service and the facilities during my overnight stay following the surgery. My surgery recovery went very well thanks to Dede and Nona at Bowen Hefley Orthopedics Physical Therapy in North Little Rock. My left knee was replaced by Dr. Stewart on February 22 at AR Surgical Hospital. Through physical therapy and focused exercises, I was able to start playing competitive tennis 10 weeks following the second surgery."

“There are not enough good things I can say about the World’s Most Incredible Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Samuel A Moore, D.O.  Throughout my 48 years, I’ve had my fair share of surgeries which required different surgeons – but none have come close to Dr. Moore.  His care, compassion, and effective listening & communication skills across all ages restores my faith in our healthcare system and makes me think there’s still hope. I’ve decided since he has the BEST bedside manner EVER, he needs to teach the importance of this to residents! Who wouldn’t feel safer going into surgery when your surgeon asks you to join him in prayer right before they roll you into the operating room? I’m so thankful for his excellent skills that rebuilt not only my knee, but fixed my daughter Lindsey’s as well. If you’re located in Arkansas and are in need of an orthopedic surgeon - you should 100% make an appointment with Dr. Moore!  We all know behind a successful surgeon is an amazing staff that runs the show!”

When it came time to make a decision about having surgery to replace my knee, I asked a fellow paddler and close friend who happens to be a family-care physician for his thoughts. His recommendation was Dr. Hefley. I can't thank that friend enough.

From initial examination through surgery and follow-up checkups, I could not have hoped for a better outcome thanks to all of the clinical/hospital staff that helped me through the process. Three months later (following my rehab process) I was back on the river where I was able to check off a "bucket list" river when I rafted the Gauley River in West Virginia.

What's not to like about that? Many thanks to those who made it happen!!

Three years ago I had both my hips replaced and I thought my life as I knew it was over. Everyone on Dr. Hefley’s team said I would recover but I really didn’t think I would recover to the point I’m at now, I’m close to 100% as I can get. The more I do the better I feel and at 61 I’m doing everything I did when I was 41… I ride my bike, water ski, hike, and best of all I’m building my lake house that I’ve been planning for twenty years! I don’t mean I’m acting as a general contractor, I mean that every day I get up, get dressed, drive to Greer’s Ferry Lake and start swinging a hammer. I dug my footings, backfilled my foundation, installed all rough plumbing, and now finishing up on the framing. I never dreamed of owning a new house, I dreamed of building one. Every day, every single day, I amaze myself but it’s not me, it’s because of Dr. Hefley that I am a success story. Thank you! With God's help I’ll finish my house this year (if I don’t fall off the ladder)… Great job to Dr. Hefley and his staff.

I have been a nurse for 36 years and it had taken its toll on my knees. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis over 6 years ago. I had seen 2 previous orthopedic surgeons who were both good but neither would consider surgery until I lost a significant amount of weight.  It is hard to lose weight when you are in so much pain it is very difficult to exercise.  I tried various injections, which provided no relief.  I was “bone on bone” no cartilage left. It was discouraging.

I called Bowen Hefley Orthopedics and was scheduled with Dr. Nguyen.  Dr. Nguyen walked in and looked at my x-rays, commented on how bad they looked and asked me if I wanted them fixed. Not only did he say he could do that but he assured me we could get them both done before the end of the year. On September 15, I had my right knee done and I returned on December 1 to have my second knee replaced. I recovered very quickly both times. I was so motivated to improve my life. I worked hard at rehab. I was able to return to work 4 weeks post-surgery both times! The post-op pain was nothing compared to the pain that I had from simply walking prior to surgery. I now feel like I have a new lease on life. I can walk pain free again. Everyone at work, church, and friends around town cannot believe how well I can walk. I sing Dr. Nguyen’s praises to everyone!! He is a talented surgeon who  gave me a new lease on life and I will forever be grateful to him. I realize I am just one of hundreds if not thousands of his patients but he makes life changing differences in people’s lives. Dr. Nguyen is #1 in my book!!

I am so grateful to Dr. Hefley for helping me to move again without excruciating pain after getting both knees and both hips replaced. I am playing and teaching the cello again. Dr. Hefley spaced surgeries strategically 6, 7, or 8 weeks apart and wisely chose the correct sequence. I had wished left knee first after hips because it hurt the worst. But… the left hip wasn’t strong enough yet and I knew it. He was right! Physical Therapy went very well… so difficult and painful at first. All Therapists were so attentive! I now walk more than a mile a day and do the exercises half hour in the morning and evening.

When I went to my first appointment with Dr. Paul Edwards I told him I was scared to death of surgery for a total hip replacement. He told me everything should be good after surgery and I would have no pain after recovery. Dr. Edwards said the first 2 weeks after the surgery I wouldn’t like him much, the 3rd week I would speak to him, 4th week I could have lunch with him, 5th week he would be a pretty good fellow, and by the 6th week he would be okay. The surgery was successful and 3 months after surgery I was able to ride my horses for the first time in 18 months. I would highly recommend Dr. Edwards for a total hip replacement.

I had surgery on May 2, 2023 for a torn rotator cuff by Dr. Bill Hefley. I followed his instructions on physical therapy provided by the great staff at Bowen & Hefley Physical Therapy Department and was able to start playing golf again on Labor Day, Sept 4th. Just under 6 weeks after my recovery, I hit my first hole-in-one and I credit Dr. Bill Hefley and the team at Bowen & Hefley Orthopedics for my new shoulder and for a lifelong goal to capture one of golf’s most treasured accomplishments.
